Backing Up Your Work Computer As A Platform Engineer

When formatting your work computer there are a lot of things that you only realize in hindsight that you should have made a back up off. Since I’ve done this process a couple of times this year I thought It would be handy to document them.

Let’s start with the most annoying bits.

Bookmarks

Google Chrome continues to be the best tool for different work profiles since not all can / should sync with a Google account.

To backup your Chrome bookmarks, follow these steps:

Open Google Chrome. Click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner (this is the menu button). Hover over “Bookmarks” in the dropdown menu. This will open a side menu. In the side menu, click on “Bookmark manager”. Once in the Bookmark Manager, click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner to open its menu.

Choose “Export bookmarks”.

To restore or import the bookmarks:

Open Google Chrome. Click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner to open the menu. Hover over “Bookmarks”. Click on “Import bookmarks and settings…”. Choose “Bookmarks HTML File” and click on the “Choose File” button. Locate and select the HTML file you saved earlier.

Click “Open”.

Backup your notes most of mine are in Documents/
